#JanellasMTHFRWeek: Two of the main concerns of the MTHFR mutation are as follows. And remember, 40-60% of us have this gene!

1. This mutation inhibits the body’s ability to ‘methylate’. This means converting #FOLICACID into Methyl-folate. Methyl-folate is the active and usable form of folic acid, and if the body is not getting enough of this usable folate at the cell level, a dangerous cycle begins and leads to deficiencies and a multitude of health issues.

2. Our ability to detoxify is extremely hindered. Everyday toxins are coming in, and in a normal healthy individual, toxins are also going out. In other words, continual re-toxing and de-toxing. But when you have a MTHFR mutation, toxins get trapped, and will continue to build up over the years. A big problem.

The thing is, if you have this gene mutation then taking FOLIC ACID in a supplement is like swallowing poison. Folic acid is a synthetic form of#FOLATE – the good stuff in green leafy vegetables – and is added to many of today’s processed foods, and most readily available multi-vitamins, including prenatal, pregnancy and breastfeeding formulas.

So you’ll need to avoid any supplements with FOLIC ACID and only take ‘L-MTHF’ forms, which are the methylated forms that your body can use. Also consider taking (or injecting at home) ‘methyl-B12’ which is supposed to help the body use L-MTHF.

And for all of us, MTHFR or not – Research is now showing that this type of folic acid may cause a toxic build-up in the body. Studies have been done that show folic acid supplements increase our risk of cancer cancer risk… another reason to eat whole foods, and be very careful about what brand of supplements you take.

And btw, here in Australia we have been fortifying our wheat with folic acid (and iodised salt) since 2009 (see link below), unless it’s organic, or spelt. So maybe it’s not just gluten that’s causing your health problems after all.
