To keep the bugs off use diluted neem (10:1) and spray all over the plants, including under it once a week for a month. Or plant flowers with white flowers to distract them. Any coloured flowers help also btw.
And avoid planting cruciferous veggies together – broccoli, cauli, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage.
